Deepika twin sister separated in Fair CC2C

Deepika twin sister separated in Fair CC2C
Deepika twin sister separated in Fair CC2C
If you are looking for intellectual stimulation at the movies, watch Clint Eastwood’s “Changeling” or wait for “Slumdog Millionaire” — “Chandni Chowk to China” is definitely not what you are looking for.

It’s the first big release of the year, is produced by a big Hollywood studio looking to enter the Indian market and has one of India’s most bankable stars. But it also has a lot of Bollywood “formula”.

Now whether you like this film or not depends on whether you like the “formula”. Do you like the twins separating-at-birth-and-meeting-20-years-later formula? Or perhaps the I-will-avenge-my-father’s-death formula? Take your pick because “Chandni Chowk to China” has taken each and every cliché from Hindi cinema of the 70s and 80s and repackaged it.

Akshay Kumar plays Sidhu, a simpleton cook in Delhi’s famed Chandni Chowk, who fumbles his way through life and is waiting for the stroke of luck that will change his life. Through a chance encounter possible only in Hindi cinema, he meets two natives of China. They are convinced Sidhu is the reincarnation of the ancient warrior Liu Sheng, who will rescue them from the clutches of evil villain Hojo.

Somewhere along the way we also learn of Inspector Chang, whose family was separated because of Hojo. Chang’s twin daughters, Sakhi and Suzie (played by Deepika Padukone) are separated while he loses his memory.

To attempt to explain the story beyond this point is difficult, because the plot gets too convoluted and loses itself at many places. Except for the 20 minutes in the second half, where Chang is training Akshay in the art of kung fu, the rest of the movie is one chaotic scene.

But “Chandni Chowk to China” is unabashed about this chaos. It seems to be saying — this is how we like our movies and this is how we will make them. Who cares about a coherent plot line when you have Akshay Kumar performing stunts and singing mid-air with Deepika Padukone?

Like it or not, this is Bollywood formula at its best or worst, whichever way you look at it.

Deepika replaces Katrina as Akki's favourite

deepika
"There was someone endorsing it before me and someone will step in after me…" That was the bold Katrina Kaif responding to questions about her replacing Aishwarya Rai as the brand ambassador for Nakshatra Jewellery.

DON'T MISS: Katrina shows who's number one!

As it seems, Katrina does indeed have some tough competition. Deepika Padukone, widely considered as the 'next big thing' is slowly but steadily working towards getting the 'next' out of the much-abused phrase.

Mid Day reports that the OSO star has just replaced Katrina Kaif as Akshay Kumar's favourite heroine.

Though the paper does not quote any source, the report suggests that the Khiladi Kumar is keen on moving beyond Katrina Kaif.

"AK believes in changing his leading ladies after a point. Even though the Akki-Katrina jodi is the hottest right nowm the actor is thinking ahead and is replacing her with a younger, fresher face like Deepika Padukone," the paper reads.

It seems after Chandni Chowk to China, the two stars will also act together in Sajid Khan's next House Full. What's more, apparently Akki is also in talks for another big banner film where he'd like to star opposite Deepika and not Katrina.

FROM 'CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA' TO CALIFORNIA

CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA primere
CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA primere1
CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA primere2Warner Bros' first Bollywood production 'Chandni Chowk to China' makes the largest-ever opening of any Bollywood film in US and Canada Jan 16 with its release on more than 125 screens in over 50 markets.

In addition, the Akshay Kumar Deepika starrer will also be released in 40 international markets, opening day-and-date with North America in 25 markets, according to Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. The other markets will open the film in the weeks ahead.

The first-ever Bollywood kung fu comedy, 'Chandni Chowk to China' follows one man's passage from simple cook to kung fu fighter, on a thrilling, madcap journey from the by-lanes of Chandni Chowk in Delhi to the grandeur of the Great Wall of China and beyond.

At a press conference in New York Thursday to mark the premiere of the film in the US, Akshay Kumar described 'Chandni Chowk...' as a "pure Bollywood story."

"If you are fans of Manmohan Desai, this is that kind of a film," he said. "I am anxiously waiting to go back to India and show the film to my son. My grandmother is also waiting to see the film. So it's a film for all ages."

Akshay was joined at the press conference by his 22-year old co-star Deepika Padukone and director Nikhil Advani.

Padukone plays a double role in the film - Sakhi, an Indian woman, and Meow Meow, a Chinese woman, who is also a martial arts expert.

Padukone spent six months training in martial arts. "It was a tough experience, but when Nikhil described the character to me I knew I had to learn martial arts," she said.

Akshay was all praise for the young co star. "If you watch how she kicks in the film, it's hard to believe that she learnt martial arts just a few months ago," he said.

"I'm really lucky to have worked with Akshay," Padukone said. "I grew up watching his films."

Deepika Padukone Like To Experiment

Bollywood's dusky beauty Deepika Padukone's complexion has been lightened by three shades to suit her Chinese look in the film "Chandni Chowk To China", says stylist Mallika Bhat.

"Deepika has a dusky skin tone. In 'Chandni Chowk To China', she plays two different roles - one with a Chinese look and the other with an Indian look. We worked on her complexion for both the looks," Bhat told IANS over phone from Mumbai.

"For the Chinese look we gave her a three shades lighter complexion than her original. Then we gave it a yellowish tinge that is typical with Chinese people and teamed it with sharp and prominent make-up.

"For the Indian look, we gave her a shade darker in terms of complexion, used her normal hair and gave slightly over-the-top make-up but nothing extraordinary," she added.

Bhat, who is responsible for Deepika's Chinese eyes and poker-straight fringed hair in the film, says working on the actress' look was difficult, as she does not fit the bill of a Chinese girl easily.

"It was a very challenging task. Director Nikhil Advani had briefed me very specifically about the look that he wanted Deepika to flaunt in the film. But Deepika was not an easy girl for it.

"She has a dusky complexion, large, almond-shaped eyes and long eyelashes that are totally opposite to what Chinese women look like. So I had to kind of work against nature to get the right look for her," explained Bhat.

A lot of research went behind Deepika's Chinese look in the film.

Most often in Bollywood, stylists settle for cosmetic tapes at the end of each eye to give the Chinese look to actors, but Bhat says it wasn't a feasible option because Deepika's doctors had advised her against their use.

"Cosmetic tapes would have been very painful for Deepika. She would have to keep them on for the 10-12 hours of shooting. It is one of the easiest ways to get that Chinese look, but it was not feasible and totally out of question to expect Deepika to wear it for 60-70 days of shooting," said Bhat.

To overcome this, Bhat created the look using eyeliner.

"I gave her a slightly slanted and curvy eyeliner to make her eyes look narrow. We gave her light shade contact lenses besides working upon her eyelashes also."

To enhance the look, Deepika was made to wear a specially cut wig with "poker straight and rebonded hair".

"Indians have thick hair, but in China they have fine hair; so that aspect also had to be kept in mind. I got the wig cut by celebrity hair stylist Ryan D'Rozario," said Bhat.

The 23-year-old actress also sports long fringes as a result of the stylist's research on Chinese women. She revealed that nearly 80 percent of youth there flaunted fringes or horizontal bangs. "It gives the person a very Oriental look," she said.

According to Bhat, it took her just four hours to decide upon Deepika's final look along with her team. After that, it took her team just half an hour to do up the Chinese look every time it was required.

Though Bhat says she isn't confident that she has got the look "bang on", she admits to having "managed to make Deepika look at least half-Chinese".

Releasing Jan 16, "Chandni Chowk To China" also stars superstar Akshay Kumar in the lead. The action-adventure-comedy is about an Indian cook who goes to China and has many adventures. Deepika plays Akshay's love interest in the film.

Deepika favourite for lead role in 'Robot'

After a dream debut with Bollywood 'Badshaah' Shah Rukh Khan in 'Om Shanti Om', Deepika Padukone appears set to storm the south with a possible role opposite Tamil superstar Rajinikanth in the big-budget film "Robot".

Padukone's name is "on the top of the list of contenders for heroine" in the Rs 100-crore venture by director Shankar, sources in the film production unit here said.

Shankar, who directed last year's runaway hit "Sivaji - The Boss" also starring Rajinikanth, has already teamed up with the style icon and renowned music composer A R Rehman.

The 22-year-old model-turned-actress has received the Star Screen award for "most promising newcomer" and Stardust "Superstar of Tomorrow"" award.

Going by the mantra that actresses make a dent in Kollywood after starring opposite Rajinikanth or Kamal Hassan, the media began the buzz about Deepika acting in "Robot".

The speculation earlier was that Shah Rukh Khan would play the lead in the the film, to be made in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi, before Shankar succeeded in getting the Tamil matinee idol to agree.

Deepika pairs with Sharman Joshi in Rakesh Roshan venture

The audience as well as those in the industry not only has great expectations from Rakesh Roshan, whose all previous films have been super-duper hits, but also on Deepika.

Having got her big break opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om, Deepika Padukone will now be seen with Sharman Joshi in Rakesh Roshan’s unititled next celluloid venture. Incidentally, the success of Om Shanti Om has sky-rocketed Deepika’s demand among the Bollywood crop of directors and now we learn that the lass is demanding a whopping Rs one crore fee for each film that she is signing!

If that makes you raise your brows, there’s more. We are told that when Rakesh Roshan decided to take up the new venture, he had thought of casting a more popular face as the film’s hero. However, as it is basically a heroine-oriented film, no actor worth his name or value was willing to oblige the senior Roshan. Hence, he had to settle on Sharman Joshi.

Meanwhile, industry sources say that despite being a heroine-oriented film, the venture may prove to be detrimental for Deepika at this nascent stage of her career. They argue that heroine-oriented films are neither given much importance by the Bollywood crowd, nor are they great crowd pullers at the box office. Interestingly, these days even the women in the audience are not too fond of heroine-oriented films.

Now what remains to be seen is how the new celluloid pair fares at the box office. The audience as well as those in the industry not only has great expectations from Rakesh Roshan, whose all previous films have been super-duper hits, but also on Deepika. We earnestly hope and pray that this film also proves to be a boon for Deepika, for Bollywood has the unique reputation of elevating a non-entity on Cloud nine in one movie and then tumbling them to obscurity in another. We sincerely hope that this does not happen to Deepika.

Om Shanti Om Preview

There was a time when movies were made as 'masala mix' which could boast of a statement - 'Isme action bhi hai, drama bhi hai, emotion bhi comedy bhi aur romance bhi'!

Farah Khan had achieved it in MAIN HOON NAA earlier. Now she promises to do the same at a much bigger scale and grandeur with OM SHANTI OM. And to add to the fun, she mixes up the reincarnation theme too with a 70s setting to it!

As is a known fact by now, the film is about Om [Shahrukh Khan], a junior artist from the 70s who falls in love with the biggest superstar of her era, Shanti [Deepika Padukone]. Though his admiration for her began as a fan, he found himself getting closer to her with every passing day.

In Om, Shanti too found solace as she could be herself sans her superstar tag. Meanwhile Om also had the company of his mother [Kirron Kher] and Pappu Master [Shreyas Talpade], his friend and co-star. Enter the villain Mukesh Mehra [Arjun Rampal], a Bollywood star in himself and the coming together of Om and Shanti seemed like a forgotten dream.

Both Om and Shanti die, only to meet each other again in their new 'janam'. Circa 21st century and Om is now Om Kapoor, a reigning superstar who now enjoys all the fame and success even though he has deficiencies as an actor. Meanwhile Shanti too is back as Sandy.

But how about fighting off the bad forces again? Will Mukesh resurface to come between Om and Sandy again?

As a film OM SHANTI OM comes with a number of specials:

- Guest appearance by over 30 stars
- SRK's six pack abs
- Arjun Rampal's new look
- Amisha and Dia special appearance
- Pyarelal coming from a hiatus and arranging 'Dhoom Tana'
- 70s style over the top drama

Releasing at record number of prints all over the globe, OM SHANTI OM is poised to be one of the biggest earners of 2007 as it hits the screens this Diwali.

SRK magic continues at 42

His charisma, wit and intelligence make him stand apart and his humility has endeared him to the masses.

No wonder, in a short span Shah Rukh Khan has become a phenomenon. And now the Bollywood superstar, who turned 42 on Friday, is set to charm movie buffs with his much-awaited Om Shanti Om.

"I am like a bad habit and you can't kick those bad habits. It is the worst habit India has. Good habits you can get over but bad habits it is very difficult for people to get over and you are stuck with them for the rest of your life," said Khan in a candid chat with NDTV.

Shah Rukh has specially cultivated six-pack abs for the film and even gone shirtless for his forthcoming film.

"My fans should not feel short changed or cheated that they wanted more out of Shah Rukh and could not get it. Every film is about respect. It is always going to be the star first, my personality first or the one who has repeatedly been blamed for playing himself. Yes, I have played myself by playing someone else. Or as Salman said I am just too damn good looking," he laughed.

SRK is fiercely promoting his home production Om Shanti Om which has been set in the backdrop of the 1970s Bollywood.

The film has re-incarnation theme as its backdrop and is directed by good friend Farah Khan.

SRK, who is known for bringing in energy and liveliness on his sets, said he would love to continue working like this.

"I bring happiness in films. If a filmmaker has worked with me he will not work with anybody else because of the kind of happiness I bring on the sets just through my work, it is not because of my jokes.

It is an experience working with me. I am not hard selling myself because I will not sign more than two-three films. I may not have promoted so much love and experience through my films, as I do it on my sets," said SRK.

"I find true love with my kids unconditionally but here also I want to please them. So, you can imagine what desire will I have to please the people I don't even know. I want to make them love me through my work. As a professional I just want everyone to go back home and love me. Why I have it I don't know," he said.

SRK's new movie also introduces model turned actress Deepika Padukone, daughter of former badminton ace Prakash Padukone.

The actor is reported to have sold the film, made at a budget of Rs 400 million, for Rs 700 million.

On Nov 9, the film will clash with another much-hyped movie - Sanjay Leela Bhansali's musical extravaganza Saawariya which stars, Nitu and Rishi Kapoor's son Ranbir and Anil Kapoor's daughter Sonam. Sony Pictures, co-producer of the film, is splurging big money on its publicity.

But Shah Rukh is unfazed.

"Nobody is going to use money to oust the goodwill that I have created."

Although not good-looking in the conventional terms, Shah Rukh's mass appeal is amazing. This was quite obvious when he became host of STAR Plus' popular quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati, which had become synonymous with icon Amitabh Bachchan.

When launched on Jan 22 this year, the initial response to the quiz show was not so encouraging. And comparisons with original host Amitabh were inevitable. But soon the comparisons stopped, and people began enjoying the show.

With his irresistible charm and wittiness, Shah Rukh gave a new makeover to the show and viewers began looking forward to it. Its witty content made the show a kind of a stress buster.

Shah Rukh is considered one of the premium brands of India. However, he says that he never worked consciously to achieve the status.

At a time when most of the successful actors are Hollywood bound, Shah Rukh brushes aside such aspirations and says he will be the first "Permanent movie star in the world for I will be like an addiction, I am like a bad habit, one doesn't want to leave it."

Shah Rukh, who started off as a stark newcomer in the industry in 1992 minus a godfather, is keen that India should have Oscar-like academy awards. He also wants to introduce new film technology and has plans to build his own studio.

Age is no bar to this superstar who seems to look younger, get better and more energetic with the passing years, just like old wine. (With agency inputs)

What do you think about Om Shanti Om

Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padhukone, Arjun Rampal, Shreyas Talpade
Director: Farah Khan
Producer: Shah Rukh Khan
Music: Vishal Dadlani, Shekhar Ravjiani
- Anupama Chopra, Consulting Editor, Films

Bollywood’s blockbuster weekend is finally here. After months of deafening hype, Om Shanti Om and Saawariya have hit theatres and the question on everybody’s lips is: are the films any good or was it all sound and fury signifying nothing.

In a recent interview, Shah Rukh Khan stated that all logic and intellect should be left at the door of filmmaking. They certainly seemed to have followed that dictum while making OSO.

OSO is a reincarnation saga, made with, as Arjun Rampal playing a producer puts it, Manmohan Desai Ka angle.

So anything is possible. The climax is Karz meets Madhumati and in certain scenes Kiron Kher seems to be directly channeling Rakhee from Karan Arjun.

The first half of the film, set in the 1970s, is a breezy roller coaster ride. Director Farah Khan pays homage to the film industry of 30 years ago.

The time-worn cliches of Hindi cinema are trotted out—so the mother makes kheer and the heroine tells leering villains bhagwan ke liye mujhe chod do—but it is done with such affection that you feel nostalgic for a time when actors sported giant sideburns and actresses danced on drums.

There is also a superbly funny scene in which a young Sooraj Barjatya is shown taking notes for his future films.

The love story of Om Prakash Makhija, a junior artist played by Shah Rukh Khan, and Shantipriya, a megastar played by Deepika Padukone, is charming.

Surprisingly Farah loses her footing when it comes to contemporary Bollywood.

Om Prakash is now reborn as Om Kapoor, a spoilt superstar. OK, as he likes to be called, discovers the mysteries of his last birth and sets out to punish the wicked producer who killed his beloved Shantipriya.

There is an item number with lovingly shot close-ups of Shah Rukh’s new rippling torso and a party number with more stars than you can count, but post-interval OSO starts to creak.

The screenplay strains to tie-up the loose ends and the leave logic behind mantra goes into overdrive. Beyond a point, the proceedings become pure tedium. Watch out though for the stand out Filmfare Award nominations.

Shah Rukh Khan is first-rate in his junior artist avtaar. His longing for stardom and Shantipriya is sweet and sad—Om is such a ham that you know even if he had lived he would have never made it.

But OK is such a clichéd and underwritten character that there isn’t much that Shah Rukh can do with it.

Ditto for Deepika Padukone. The luminous debutant is pitch-perfect as the megastar but she’s mostly chewing gum in the second half. Shreyas Talpade, as Om’s sidekick, suffers the same fate. However, Arjun Rampal as the suave, menacing producer is surprisingly good.

OSO has serious glamour, thumping music and some inspired comic moments but the film never aspires to be more than a time-pass entertainer, which coming from such a talented crew is disappointing.

OSO is intermittently engaging but once the lights are back on, there is nothing you will take home with you.

Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone in ‘Made in China’

Akshay Kumar who carved his first niche in Bollywood as an action hero slowly got into comedy films. Now, with a long stretch of seven years, Akshay is going to enact in a complete action packed film which will also be Warner Brothers’ first Bollywood film. The film titled ‘Made in China’ will have Deepika Padukone opposite Akshay Kumar. The producers will be Ramesh and Rohan Sippy.

Akshay Kumar is undergoing training in the martial art form called Wushu which has been the style largely used by Jackie Chan and Jet Lee. It is well-known that Akshay admires and adores Jackie Chan.

’Akshay has been a martial arts student for years,’ director Nikhil Advani told. ‘The Wushu style is very big in China. Jet Li and Jackie Chan constantly practice it,’ he added.
